Write and illustrate short picture books with AI, then let Amazon print and ship each copy. The hard part is not the story, it is making the same character look the same on every page.

The short playbook

  1. Pick an age band and hold to it. A book for three-year-olds and one for eight-year-olds share almost nothing.
  2. Write the story first in Claude or ChatGPT, at a fixed page count, so the pictures serve the words rather than the reverse.
  3. Illustrate in Midjourney or Leonardo using character reference features, and expect to regenerate. Inconsistent characters are the most common reason these books read as cheap.
  4. Lay it out in Canva at a standard KDP trim size and export the PDF. Amazon requires you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish.

Common questions

Does Amazon allow AI-generated books?

Yes, with disclosure. KDP requires you to tell them when content is AI-generated at the point of publishing. That is a declaration to Amazon, not a label on your cover. What gets accounts closed is volume-publishing low-effort books, which the rules specifically target.

What's the hardest part?

Character consistency. The same child has to look like the same child on page after page, and image models drift. Character reference features help, and you should still expect to regenerate pages. Books where the character changes between spreads read as cheap immediately.

Do you need to be able to draw?

No, but you need taste and patience. The skill is judging which of forty generations actually works on the page, and being willing to redo the ones that nearly do. That judgment is what separates these books from the flood of ones that do not sell.

Paperback or digital?

Both, and they are different products. Print-on-demand through KDP means you never hold stock, while the same story sold as a printable PDF on Etsy has no printing cost at all. The PDF version usually needs a simpler layout to survive a home printer.
